Jodhpur, Sept. 6 -- Chief secretary V Srinivas on Saturday inspected restoration work at the Rajasthan high court's principal seat in Jodhpur, days before he is scheduled to appear personally before the court on September 15 over alleged substandard construction and the deteriorating condition of the building's central dome. The inspection came after the High Court took suo motu cognisance of structural defects in the building on August 10. Expressing serious concern over its condition, the court described the building as a "temple of justice" and a symbol of the rule of law. A bench of justices Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Rekha Borana summoned senior officials, including the chief secretary, to explain the lapses. It also pulled up the managing director of the Rajasthan State Road Development and Construction Corporation for what it termed an "unduly casual" response. Experts from IIT Bombay and IIT Jodhpur have identified structural defects, including corrosion of steel reinforcement and cracks in concrete. According to an IIT Bombay report, the central dome can be repaired but requires time-bound restoration in accordance with the National Building Code, 2005. During the inspection, Srinivas reviewed the progress and quality of repairs at the museum, the dome and other sections of the building.
