Caste panchayat boycotts family for refusing their decision over marriage, case filed: Police
Barmer/Balotra, May 26 -- A case has been registered after a family has been allegedly ostracised by a caste panchayat in Rajasthan's Balotra district for nearly two years after they refused to marry their daughter according to the wishes of community leaders, police said on Monday.
The case reported from Sewali village under the Samdari police station area. Following court directions, police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the allegations.
According to the complaint, a meeting of community elders was convened in 2024 at a community hall in Karmavas village. During the gathering, members of the caste panchayat allegedly pressured the complainant's family to arrange the marriage of their daughter with a particular youth from the community.
The family, however, refused the proposal, saying that their daughter was not yet of marriageable age and that the decision regarding her marriage would be taken by the family at an appropriate time. The refusal allegedly angered some members of the panchayat, who then declared the entire family socially boycotted.
The complainant alleged that instructions were issued to community members not to speak with the family, maintain social relations, attend family functions, or invite them to social events.
The family claims that the boycott led to severe social isolation and mental distress.
Adding to the seriousness of the allegations, the complainant claimed that recently when efforts were made to rejoin the community, a demand for a penalty of Rs.50 lakh was allegedly made as a condition for ending the boycott. The family has also accused certain individuals of attempting to interfere with their daughter's engagement.
Samdari SHO Narpatdan Ratnu said following the court's directives they have registered the FIR on May 24.
"A case has been registered as directed by the court. The allegations made by the complainant are being thoroughly investigated. Statements of all concerned parties will be recorded," Ratnu said....
