4-yr-old girl dies in barmer, family alleges medical negligence
Barmer, Oct. 5 -- A four-year-old girl died during treatment at a government hospital in Barmer on Friday afternoon, district health officials said on Saturday. The family of the deceased alleged medical negligence by hospital authorities, who have ordered an internal probe into the matter and conferred awaiting postal order (APO) status on two staff members, the officials concerned said.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered, police said, adding that the corresponding investigation was underway. The deceased, Jashoda, was suffering from a bout of fever for two days before she was admitted to the primary health centre in Mithdaau on Thursday,according to a complaint filed on Friday at Bijrad police station by the girl's father, Arvind Kumar.
After she showed no improvement over Thursday night, her mother took her back to the PHC on Friday afternoon, wherein Dr Ramesh Punjani and auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) Shanta allegedly administered an injection, after which her health began to deteriorate rapidly, added the complaint. It said that the girl was discharged despite losing consciousness and taken back home, wherein a further breakdown necessitated an emergency return to the hospital where she was subsequently declared dead.
Dr Punjani starkly denied that the injection was allegedly responsible for the child's death. He said that he had advised a transfer to a facility in Chohtan, which had proper oxygen infrastructure.
He and ANM Shanta were both relieved of their duties and attached to Barmer, pending a departmental inquiry, said chief medical and health officer (CMHO) Vishnuram Bishnoi....
