250-year-old shrine among those served notice amid 'Op Clean'
Barmer/Jaisalmer, June 21 -- A major anti-encroachment drive along the India-Pakistan border in western Rajasthan has sparked a political controversy and local resentment after authorities issued notices to several religious structures, including a nearly 250-year-old shrine in Jaisalmer district.
As part of the ongoing "Operation Clean," the administration has served a notice to the management of the historic Mehmood Shah Pir Jilani Dargah in Ramgarh town, located near the international border. The shrine has been asked to furnish legal ownership documents for the land and construction by June 22 under provisions of the Rajasthan Colonisation Act.
Officials have warned that if satisfactory documents are not submitted within the stipulated period, demolition could begin after noon on June 23.
The notice was pasted on the shrine's boundary wall on June 18 as part of a wider campaign aimed at removing alleged encroachments and unauthorized constructions within 50 kilometres of the India-Pakistan border, citing national security concerns.
Local residents say the dargah has been a centre of faith for generations and is visited by both Muslims and Hindus. Two annual fairs are held at the site, attracting devotees and pastoral communities across the region.
Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot in a social media post criticised the action, saying border districts have maintained communal harmony since Independence, with Hindu and Muslim communities respecting each other's religious sites. He urged the Centre and the state government not to create unnecessary controversy.
The operation gained momentum after home minister Amit Shah reviewed border security arrangements during his recent visit to Bikaner.
