'National Anthem ko pack up karna chahiye'
India, Aug. 21 -- Actor-producer Mukesh Khanna, known for Shaktimaan, has stirred controversy with a strong demand to replace India's National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, with the National Song, Vande Mataram. The 68-year-old alleged that the poet Rabindranath Tagore had written the anthem, praising the British. "I have been saying this for so many years. I don't know why we are carrying on with Jana Gana Mana for so long," says the actor who recently recorded a seven-minute rendition of the National Song that he hopes becomes iconic.
He also raises questions about the wording of the National Anthem. The actor points out what does 'Bharat bhaagya vidhaata' mean?: "Aap mere Bharat ke bhaagya ke vidhaata ho? Jaya hey, Jaya hey, yeh unke jayjaykaar mein likha gaya yeh geet. I have been saying that (certain things with) the Nehru (Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister) sarkaar, for 60-70 years, have been carried out wrongly."
Khanna adds, "Vande Mataram isliye accept nahin hua only because of the vote bank (of the previous government).
His comment comes after Vande Mataram was granted legal protection as the National Anthem from the centre, with President Droupadi Murmu assenting to a Bill that makes deliberate disruption or insult during its rendition punishable.
The actor is also happy with the new Vande Mataram guidelines, which expand its use in schools and official events and mandate its full rendition on prescribed occasions. "Acchi baat hai ki shuruat hui hai. Schools and functions mein kaha gaya hai ki pehle Vande Mataram chalaiye, baad mein National Anthem chalaiye. But dheere dheere National Anthem ko bhi pack up kariye, yeh main kadhi shabdon mein bolna chahta hoon," he shares....
