Vehicle breakdowns, pre-Diwali rush trigger long snarls in Ggm
Gurugram, Nov. 4 -- Commuters faced long delays across Gurugram on Tuesday as heavy pre-Diwali traffic and two vehicle breakdowns triggered snarls stretching up to 4km during peak hours.
National Highway-48 (NH-48), the Delhi-Gurugram border, Cyber City-Udyog Vihar and the Leisure Valley Park-Tau Devi Lal Stadium corridor were among the worst affected. Traffic police warned that congestion could persist during peak hours for another two to three days.
On NH-48, vehicles heading towards Gurugram from the direction of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport moved slowly near the border. Traffic also crawled along a nearly 3km stretch between DLF Cyber City and Udyog Vihar, past Belvedere Towers in Sector 24.
Traffic police maintained that checks at the Delhi border for vehicles that do not meet BS-VI emission standards were not a significant cause of Tuesday's congestion. An official said relatively few such vehicles were reaching the border.
Delhi began restricting the entry of petrol and diesel vehicles registered outside the capital that do not meet BS-VI standards on November 1, as part of steps to curb winter pollution.
Manoj Kumar, an autorickshaw driver who regularly travels through Udyog Vihar and Cyber City, questioned the restrictions. "What is the point of the ban when snarls cause so much pollution?" he said.
A truck breakdown near Jharsa disrupted traffic along the stretch between Leisure Valley Park and Tau Devi Lal Stadium. Meena Verma, a Sector 49 resident, said the disruption led to delays. "It took me 30 minutes to cross the stretch, which usually takes 10 minutes," she said.
A Haryana Roadways bus also broke down near Narsinghpur on Tuesday afternoon, causing a nearly 4km jam on NH-48 between Narsinghpur post office and Khandsa Mandi. Police said queues spilled from the main carriageway onto the service lane. The bus was later removed.
Slow-moving traffic was also reported on Old Delhi-Gurugram Road, Old Railway Road, roads around Sector 37 and Sadar Bazaar, near Hero Honda Chowk, Southern Peripheral Road and Ghata T-point.
Ahead of Diwali on November 8, traffic police have increased deployment at major intersections and 30 congestion-prone points. Rajiv Chowk, Subhash Chowk and Shankar Chowk are being manned round the clock in three shifts. "Our aim is to ensure smooth traffic so that residents can commute to and from work on time," traffic police spokesperson Vikas Verma said....
