Sohna Road caves in again after sewer line collapse; 7th incident in three yrs
Gurugram, Nov. 3 -- A portion of Sohna Road near Subhash Chowk caved in again on Monday after a sewer pipeline running beneath the stretch collapsed, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials said. This is the seventh such incident on the Rajiv Chowk-Sheeshpal Vihar stretch in the past three years and the second this year.
The latest cave-in has again raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the sewer line and delays in permanent repairs, despite NHAI receiving approval for a Rs.58-crore restoration project in May.
According to NHAI officials, the cave-in left a sinkhole measuring approximately two feet by two feet on the road surface. However, the cavity appeared considerably wider underground and was estimated to be around 20 feet deep.
NHAI barricaded the damaged section and closed the leftmost lane of Sohna Road in the Gurugram-to-Sohna direction as a precautionary measure.
"We inspected the cave-in, which occurred after the main sewer line running underneath collapsed. NHAI has decided to ask the contractor to undertake permanent repairs to prevent further cave-ins," said NHAI project director Yogesh Tilak.
He said traffic marshals had been deployed to regulate vehicular movement, while two lanes remained open.
Tilak said the sewer flow would first be diverted and the drains desilted before repairs were undertaken along the Rajiv Chowk-Sheeshpal Vihar stretch.
"The tender for repairs using cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) technology has already been awarded. The work is estimated to cost Rs.58 crore. It will start at the earliest and be completed by February," he said.
However, NHAI officials had announced on May 27 that the authority's headquarters had approved the Rs.58-crore proposal for permanent repairs. More than five months later, the work is yet to begin.
Asked about the delay, officials said the authority had planned to undertake repairs after the monsoon, when the volume of wastewater in the main sewer line decreases.
A similar cave-in occurred near SD Adarsh School on May 6, when a dumper carrying construction material became stuck after a section of the road subsided. NHAI subsequently carried out temporary repairs to the damaged road and drain.
According to Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials, the sewer line between Rajiv Chowk and Sheeshpal Vihar was laid by the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran around three decades ago.
The pipeline, which runs approximately 20 feet beneath the highway, carries wastewater from Sectors 45 to 51 to the sewage treatment plant in Behrampur.
Its condition has deteriorated over the past three years, with repeated collapses along the stretch between Subhash Chowk and Sheeshpal Vihar near Raheja Mall....
