New Delhi, Feb. 8 -- Around 20-25 people gathered to take photographs of a fallen man and his motorbike inside a pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board in west Delhi's Janakpuri on Friday morning, but not one made an effort to rescue the victim or call the police, said 32-year-old Shivani, a passerby who was the first to inform the police. She discovered banking telecaller Kamal Dhyani and his motorcycle lying inside the pit while walking her Class 1 son to Andhra School around 7:45 am. "I constantly pleaded with them to call the police for help. But they turned a deaf ear to my request and continued taking videos and photographs," said Shivani, a homemaker from Sagarpur. Being a mother, she thought of Dhyani's mother waiting for him. "So, I dialled 112 and informed the police about the matter, despite initially thinking against it to avoid legal formalities," she said. After dropping her son at school, she returned to the scene. Shivani claimed she first informed a security guard at a nearby residential society, but he refused to call the police. She then approached three more guards at another gate, who also turned down her request. Upon returning to the pit, she informed a rickshaw puller, who screamed for help, attracting a crowd that still did not alert authorities. She stayed for nearly five minutes after calling the police before leaving to catch a bus home. After departing, she received multiple calls from officers asking for her location and account of the incident. Shivani's husband, Neeraj, works in an information technology company. Her actions highlighted the bystander apathy she encountered, as the crowd preferred recording the incident over offering assistance to the injured man....
