Man sends hoax bomb email to derail ex's interview, held
Gurugram, Feb. 26 -- A 29-year-old manwas arrested for allegedly sending a hoax bomb threat email to a private firm at DLF One Horizon Centre in Sector 43 on Golf Course Road in a bid to get his former girlfriend's job interview cancelled, police said on Wednesday.
The suspect was identified as Aniket Paul, who is from Kolkata and lives in a rented accommodation in Sector 31, Gurugram. He works as a legal adviser with a Gurugram-based firm, police said. Police said Paul completed his LLM from King's College London and worked there as a teaching assistant before returning to India and taking up a job in Gurugram.
Investigators said he allegedly sent the threat email to the firm around 9.15am on Tuesday, following which the police control room was alerted.
A bomb detection and disposal squad, along with a dog squad and additional police personnel, reached the office and evacuated the entire building to sanitise the premises.
Vikas Kaushik, assistant commissioner of police (DLF), said Paul had been in a relationship with a Delhi-based woman for the past two years, but they broke up about two months ago.
"However, they were still in touch and the woman was looking for a job. Paul got to know that she had an interview scheduled at One Horizon Centre," he said.
Kaushik said Paul allegedly planned to get the interview cancelled, assuming she would approach him for help, which he believed might rekindle their relationship. "He searched for the firm where the interview was scheduled and sent an email threatening to blow up the premises," he said.
Investigators said the cybercrime team traced Paul within 12 hours through technical surveillance, after which his mobile phone and SIM card, allegedly used to create the fake email address, were seized.
The ACP said Paul attempted to mask his IP address and other technical details to evade detection. "However, the measures he took proved futile, and our technical team was able to track him within 12 hours," he said. Sustained interrogation later revealed the motive behind the hoax threat, police added.
On a complaint by Dinesh Sharma, a security guard at the firm, an FIR was registered against the suspect under sections 217 (false information), 351(3) (criminal intimidation by threatening to cause death or grievous hurt), 351(4) (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication), and 353 (statements conducing to public mischief) of BNS at Sushant Lok police station on Tuesday....
