Gurugram, Aug. 19 -- A 22-year-old man was killed after being assaulted, partially tonsured, branded a thief on his scalp with a pen, and then pushed off a terrace in Sector 17, police said on Monday. Investigators said two of the three suspects - Aman Tiwari, 20, of Prayagraj, and Akhilesh Kumar, 22, of Banda, both residents of Uttar Pradesh - were arrested and sent to judicial custody on Sunday. The third suspect, Shashi Kant, is absconding, officers associated with the case said. Police identified the deceased as Manjeet Lal, 22, a native of Banda who had shifted to Gurugram only two weeks earlier and worked as a helper in a Sector 18 private firm. He was living in a four-storey Sirhaul building with his elder brother, Manish Lal, 25, and others, including Tiwari. According to police, the incident occurred between 7.30pm and 8pm on August 14, the eve of Independence Day. Sandeep Kumar, Gurugram police spokesperson, said Lal had stolen Tiwari's mobile phone from his unlocked room earlier in the day and left the house. "When Tiwari failed to find his phone, he scanned the building CCTV footage and found it was Lal who had stolen it," he said. Kumar added that another resident shared Manish's phone number with Tiwari. "He called Manish, who promised to return the phone. Afterwards, Manish brought Lal home, and Tiwari got his phone back," he said. Investigators said Manish slapped Lal twice, while family members scolded him for causing embarrassment. However, Tiwari remained enraged and, two hours later, roped in Kumar and Kant. According to police, the trio allegedly assaulted Lal, after which Tiwari and Kumar shaved half his head and wrote "thief" on his scalp. A senior police officer said Lal escaped briefly but was caught on the terrace, beaten again and pushed off, causing his death. "When we reached the spot, the body was found lying in a pool of blood with the writing visible on the scalp," the senior said. Police recovered the trimmer used in the tonsuring. A murder case has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Sector 18 police station on the complaint of Lal's elder brother, officers said....
