Ggm, Panchkula to get their own anti-terror police units
Gurugram, March 3 -- The Haryana government will established an anti-terrorism squad with dedicated police stations in Gurugram and Panchkula, chief minister Nayab Singh Saini announced during his budget speech on Monday.
Saini said Rs.35.5 crore will be spent to raise the squad in the financial year 2026 to 2027. "An inspector-general-rank IPS officer will head the unit, and there will be a provision of women commandos in it," Saini said in his speech.
A senior IPS police officer of Gurugram police said the ATS will function as a completely different entity from the district police. Its command chain is expected to report to an ADGP-rank officer in the state police headquarters and further directly to the director general of police (DGP). At least 200 to 500 strength is expected to be raised in the squad initially, which will be further expanded," he said.
He added that the setting up of the ATS in Haryana had already been in the pipeline but was fast-tracked after Delhi's Red Fort suicide blast on November 10 last year.
Officials aware of the development said the ATS will have a commando unit, intelligence unit, prosecution unit and training unit.
Another IPS officer, preferring not to be named, said it was the Haryana police Special Task Force STF that had sent a proposal to the police headquarters nearly two years ago to set up an ATS to investigate terror-related cases.
"We had sent a detailed proposal to the headquarters that time emphasising raising ATS. The state government gave the approval on the home department's file earlier this year after it remained in consideration for almost six months," he said. Officials said that until now, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) handled terror cases in Haryana and that the ATS being set up will remain under it.
They added that once the police stations at Gurugram and Panchkula are established, they will have jurisdiction over the southern and northern Haryana districts, respectively.
Gurugram police commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora said the police headquarters is working on the establishment. "Once the government identifies land, it will be clear in which part of Gurugram the ATS police station will come up," Arora said, adding that the ATS presence in the city will be an add-on to the security of the district and neighbouring areas....
