Amit Shah launches drive to restore Delhi Ridge with 10mn trees
New Delhi, July 8 -- Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday launched a massive afforestation programme in the Capital under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign, announcing that more than 10 million native trees, shrubs and medicinal plants will be planted across Delhi's Ridge over the next three years as part of an ambitious ecological restoration plan.
Shah said the initiative, which includes planting of native plants across the 6,300-hectare Ridge, is central to the government's vision of restoring Delhi's "lungs" and improving the city's environment.
Also on Tuesday, Shah flagged off 11 electric buses, part of a new fleet of 300 buses being inducted into the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), taking the national capital's total electric bus fleet to 4,800.
The announcements came as Shah inaugurated the "Eco-Restoration Mega Plantation Drive", which also marked the launch of a citywide campaign to plant 7 million saplings this monsoon. He planted saplings at Nanaksar Ridge and RK Puram while simultaneous plantation drives were held at 51 locations across Delhi.
Addressing the gathering, Shah said the plantation drive formed part of a broader package of infrastructure and environmental initiatives launched on Tuesday.
"Today many programmes have been brought together from this single platform. The foundation stone of the high-security prison in Narela was laid, the e-inauguration of the automated vehicle testing centre was done, three newly built depots were inaugurated, 300 electric buses were launched, and most importantly, we have started the programme to rejuvenate the Ridge and make it green once again," he said.
Highlighting the ecological significance of the Ridge, Shah said the government had provided legal protection to a large part of the forest. "The restored Ridge will become Delhi's lungs and protect Delhi's environment."
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta also described the plantation campaign as a major step towards increasing Delhi's green cover and thanked the Union government for supporting the initiative. "We have already added over five hectares of land as protected forest," she said....
