Jodhpur, Sept. 28 -- A 40-year-old man who was shouting slogans in support of Ladakh climate activist and Magsaysay award winner Sonam Wangchuk outside Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday was detained, police said. He was carrying the tricolour and chanting "Bharat Mata ki Jai." Wangchuk had been taken into custody under the National Security Act (NSA) on Friday and shifted from Leh to Jodhpur jail. His arrest followed violent protests in Ladakh demanding statehood, in which at least four people were killed and several others injured. Ratanada police station officer Dinesh Lakhawat said the youth identified himself as Vijyapal, a resident of Sujangarh in Churu district. According to police, Vijyapal told them he learned from his wife's phone message that Wangchuk was being brought to Jodhpur. He said he thought Sujangarh was 256 kilometers away from Jodhpur, a number he connected with "56 inches," and felt he should travel there. He then cycled to Sujangarh railway station and boarded a train to Jodhpur. Vijyapal told police he was an ordinary man who came only to stand by a "patriotic brother." He added that he wanted to remain outside the jail so that he could feel close to Wangchuk and his emotions. When police asked him to move towards their vehicle, he refused, saying that if detained he would go on a hunger strike. He insisted on walking with the police rather than getting into the vehicle, but was eventually made to sit inside and taken away. Police said he has been detained for questioning. An official said Wangchuk was brought to the prison at 8.30 pm on Friday in a convoy of police and Army vehicles and kept in a separate ward....
