Gurugram, Sept. 26 -- The Gurugram traffic police fined 1,716 motorists and collected Rs.34.32 lakh in fines during a 24-day special drive against speeding, officers said on Friday. The drive was conducted from September 1 to 24 on major expressways and arterial routes, including the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the Golf Course Road. According to police data,1,716 challans were issued during the drive. Officers said the fines were imposed under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for exceeding prescribed speed limits. Senior police officials said the drive aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidents and fatalities.Traffic personnel deployed barricades and morning pickets at vulnerable stretches to catch motorists speeding on relatively empty roads. The drive was part of regular enforcement against traffic violations that increase the risk of crashes.
