New Delhi, Aug. 4 -- Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who led a 36-day sit-in protest against alleged sexual harassment by former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, said the wrestlers will lodge an appeal against the latter's acquittal by a Delhi court. The two-time Olympian issued a statement on X shortly after Delhi's Rouse Avenue court acquitted Singh and co-accused Vinod Tomar, a former WFI joint secretary, in the sexual harassment case filed by six women wrestlers. One of the wrestlers, a minor, later withdrew her complaint. Based on the complaints, the Delhi police registered an FIR against Singh on June 15, 2023. The police chargesheet was filed against Singh, a six-time former Lok Sabha MP, under sections 354, 354A , 354D and 506 of the IPC. "It took a lot of courage from us to take to streets and get a FIR filed against a leader from the ruling party. Brij Bhushan used his clout to force a number of girls to withdraw their complaints.
