Two beaten to death in Assam over suspicion of cattle theft
GUWAHATI, May 23 -- Two people were beaten to death and another sustained injuries on Friday after a mob attacked them on suspicion of being cattle thieves in Sonitpur district of Assam, police said.
According to the police, the incident took place at Bhalukpung area when three people were accused of stealing three cows grazing in a field. "The trio had stolen the cows and were about to escape when they were intercepted by a group of villagers. They were severely beaten up by the mob," said Sonipur senior police superintendent, Barun Purkayastha. "A police team was rushed to the site as soon as we got information about the incident. By the time they arrived at the scene, two of them had succumbed to their injuries," he added. The third, who was injured, was shifted to a nearby hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.
Purkayastha said that initial probe has revealed that the deceased were from Morigaon district. But their identities are yet to be ascertained. "The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. A case of murder has been registered."...
