Three killed as car crashes into truck
Mohali, July 8 -- A wedding trip turned fatal for a family from Himachal Pradesh's Una district after their car rammed into the rear of a tipper truck near Kharar's Bajehri toll plaza on the Bharatmala Expressway on Tuesday afternoon, leaving three people dead. While one occupant died on the spot, two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
The accident is among the first major fatal crashes reported on the newly operational Bharatmala Expressway in Mohali. The 31-km greenfield corridor connects IT Chowk near Chandigarh International Airport with the Kurali-Chandigarh road and has become a preferred route for commuters travelling between Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, easing congestion on Airport Road (PR-7). Built by the National Highways Authority of India at a cost of around Rs.1,400 crore, the expressway was opened to improve regional connectivity.
According to the FIR, the accident occurred between 12 and 12.30 pm when the family was travelling from Mehatpur in Una to Chandigarh in two separate vehicles. The first vehicle, a Hyundai Creta, bearing number HP-20-G-5666, was being driven by Pratyush Jain, while his brother, Aditya Jain, followed behind in a Hyundai Grand i10 (HP-49-6723) along with his wife.
Police said the Hyundai Creta, carrying Pratyush, his wife Harakshi Taneja, their relative Suresh Kumar, who was an advocate, and family friend Sameera, crashed into the truck in front after the driver suddenly applied brakes.
The impact severely damaged the front portion of the car. Kumar died on the spot, while Pratyush and his wife remained trapped inside the mangled vehicle with critical injuries. Aditya, who had witnessed the collision, rushed to help and, along with others, arranged to shift the injured to civil hospital in Kharar Police said Pratyush and his wife later succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
The FIR states that the driver of the truck, bearing registration number PB-10-JT-0497, abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police have seized the offending vehicle and launched a search to identify and arrest the driver. Based on Aditya's statement, police registered a case under Sections 281 (rash driving), 285 (negligent conduct endangering life), 106 (causing death by negligence), and 324(4) (mischief causing damage) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Gharuan station house officer Balwinder Singh said they are examining the circumstances under which the truck stopped on the highway.
A 24-year-old hairdresser succumbed to his injuries 10 after a motorcycle hit his two-wheeler near Sohana Chowk in Mohali.
The deceased, Happy Khan, a resident of Ghurana village was heading to work at the time.
