Speed up sports infra projects, officials told
Chandigarh, May 13 -- UT chief secretary H Rajesh Prasad on Monday chaired a review meeting with a focus on sports infrastructure and international sporting events, officials said.
The meeting assessed the progress of ongoing projects, athlete welfare initiatives and Chandigarh's roadmap to emerge as a leading sports hub in the country, they said.
Officials from the sports department presented details of key projects completed during 2025-26, including an international-level Billiards and Snooker Hall at Sector 42 Sports Complex, an all-weather swimming pool at Sector 39, upgrades to the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium playing field, development of chess centres in Sectors 8 and 39, and an international-standard Boccia Court at Sector 8.
Chief secretary directed officials to expedite projects planned for 2026-27, including installation of CCTV cameras across sports complexes, astro-turf at the Sector 18 Hockey Stadium and the six-a-side hockey ground at Sector 42, besides upgrade of the synthetic athletic track at Sector 7 and facilities at Lake Sports Complex.
The administration is also bidding to host the Asian Relay Championship and the 21st Asian Roller Skating Championship in 2027, while the second Chandigarh International Marathon is proposed for November. Officials said scholarships worth Rs.22.12 crore and cash awards of Rs.9.45 crore have been disbursed to meritorious sportspersons over the last two years....
