Patna, July 31 -- The alleged suicide of a government residential school warden in Bihar's Begusarai district has turned out to be a murder, according to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe that led to the arrest of two men, officials said. Rinku Devi, warden of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Avasiya Vidyalaya, was found hanging on the school premises on April 4, 2021. The case was closed as a suicide by the local police. However, the Patna high court quashed the closure report on April 11 this year and ordered a fresh probe headed by an inspector general after Devi's daughter, Tejaswini Kumari, sought a re-investigation. The SIT, led by inspector general (IG) Vikas Vaibhav, began its probe on June 17. Two accused have been arrested - Kaushal Kumar, a co-villager of the victim, and Ajit Kumar Bablu, the school caretaker. According to officers familiar with the investigation, the breakthrough came after the forensic science laboratory (FSL) concluded that the cause of death was asphyxia due to strangulation. Investigators found that the accused allegedly hanged Devi's body after killing her to make the death appear as a suicide. The IG said the SIT re-examined the FSL team and members of the medical board that conducted the postmortem. "Some independent witnesses provided us with photographs that clearly show a noose around the neck and the rope looped from a ceiling fan and the deceased body was covered with dust. There is a bleeding wound from the nose, which proves the murder," he said. According to the SIT, the motive was linked to Rs.15 lakh that Devi had allegedly given Kaushal Kumar to purchase a plot of land on her behalf. Tejaswini Kumari said her mother repeatedly sought the return of the money after the land deal did not materialise. Investigators allege that Kumar, unwilling to return the amount, conspired with the school caretaker to kill her. The SIT findings have also raised questions over the original police investigation....
