New Delhi, Sept. 23 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to replace the public prosecutor conducting the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence trial against Ashish Mishra, son of former Union minister Ajay Mishra, after being told that crucial witnesses in the case were being given up by the present prosecutor, raising questions over a fair trial. The court, however, dismissed the plea seeking removal of the presiding officer alleged of intimidating one witness, entrusting Allahabad high court to deal with the allegations and an ongoing administrative inquiry against the judicial officer. Mishra is accused of mowing down farmers gathered to protest against the now-repealed farm laws in 2021 at a time when his father was a central government minister. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant directed the Uttar Pradesh government to replace incumbent prosecutor PB Mishra with a senior public prosecutor having a "fair experience" of conducting trial within two weeks.
