Chandigarh/Sangrur, Sept. 10 -- The political sparring over the alleged suicide of a Dalit villager in Sangrur, following a public confrontation with finance minister Harpal Cheema on the state's drug crisis, escalated on Wednesday with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi demanding Cheema's resignation and chief minister Bhagwant Mann hitting back with "stop indulging in politics over dead bodies" remark. The verbal slugfest unfolded even as the 47-year-old victim's son said that the administration initiated the process to provide his brother with a job. The victim died on Monday night after allegedly consuming poison. His family said he questioned Cheema about drug supply in the area during a public meeting in Dirba on September 6. Family members also alleged that local party officials and village leaders subsequently intimidated him and pressured him to issue a public apology, which prompted him to consume poison. Following a complaint by the family, four people were arrested under Section 108 of the BNS for abetment of suicide and relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. A special investigation team has also been set up to probe the incident. In a post in Hindi on X, Rahul alleged that a "dangerous pattern" was emerging under the AAP government, where questioning its failures was met with "threats and torture". "A Dalit man who had to watch his son fall victim to drugs, asked the finance minister just this much: why has the government failed so miserably in stopping the drug trade? For just this, he was tortured and humiliated so much, pressured so intensely to apologise, that he consumed poison," he wrote. The Congress leader also demanded an FIR against Cheema. "The CM should immediately demand the finance minister's resignation, and his name should also be added to the FIR. There should be an independent, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the entire matter. Anything less than this is not justice, it is a mere eyewash," he said. Rahul also criticised the state's emergency medical infrastructure, pointing out that the victim had to be moved across multiple facilities before succumbing due to inadequate immediate care. Hitting out at the state government, Rahul said: "Last week, I spoke to Mohanjeet Singh who was tortured for protesting against the CM." The government's job is to answer people, not to "trample upon" those who ask questions, he added. Reacting to Rahul's remarks, Mann posted on X: "The Congress leader should not indulge in politics over dead bodies. Punjabis don't like this kind of politics. When Congress leaders went to the victim's village and tried to indulge in this dirty politics, the people chased them away." The chief minister said that police had already caught all accused based on identification by the family. The Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP, and the Congress governments were responsible for spreading drugs in Punjab but no drug smuggler would be spared by the present government, he added. Taking to X, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal also said that none of the ministers or MLAs in the AAP government in Punjab had any connection to the Sangrur man's death and asked Rahul not to stoop to such dirty politics. "Who brought drugs to Punjab? Your Congress government brought them. The Akali Dal and BJP government brought them. For the first time, a state in the entire country is launching a war against drugs in this manner," he alleged. Lakhwinder Singh, victim's son, said that the administration has initiated the process to give his brother a job. He denied any kind of pressure on the family. DSP Dirba Rupinder Kaur had on Tuesday said that the family has been given financial help and assured of a government job. When contacted DSP Dirba said that the process has been initiated. She said the job is from the deputy commissioner's quota. She confirmed that the fifth accused is absconding and efforts are underway to arrest him. "It can't be ascertained as of now whether the fifth accused is in the country or has gone abroad," the DSP added....
