Protesting teachers face water cannons near Mann's Sangrur house
Sangrur, Nov. 7 -- Clashes erupted between police and protesting computer teachers in Sangrur on Friday after police used water cannons to stop their march toward the residence of Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann.
The protesters said they planned the march to demand the release of pending dearness allowance arrears. However, they alleged police used force, including water cannons and lathicharge, injuring three protesters.
The protest was led by union's state leaders Gurvinder Singh Tarn Taran, Nardeep Sharma and Jonny Singla.
They alleged that the Punjab government has long harassed computer teachers by only pretending to hold panel meetings while continuously ignoring their legitimate demands.
Singla said police also detained 35 people, who were later released.
Sangrur superintendent of police Palwinder Singh Cheema denied allegations of lathicharge, claiming that the protesters attacked the police and that water cannons were used to maintain law and order.
He said the teachers called off the protest after they were assured of a meeting with the cabinet sub-committee in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
The teachers' other demands include the merger of all computer teachers into the education department, implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission for computer teachers, release of retirement benefits and justice for families of deceased computer teachers....
