Protecting your lungs during the monsoon
India, July 19 -- The monsoon is a pleasant season, but it is important to take precautions to stay free from health problems. The rainy season brings an increased risk of respiratory illnesses, including allergic rhinitis, asthma flare-ups, bronchitis and pneumonia.
Lung ailments rise significantly during the monsoon due to extreme indoor humidity, which often exceeds 80%, rapid mould proliferation and heightened viral transmission. Damp walls and waterlogged environments release high concentrations of airborne mould spores and dust mites. Prolonged exposure to heavy indoor mould concentrations can lead to severe lung inflammation, known as hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
Allergic rhinitis is commonly triggered by exposure to pollen, mould spores and dust mites, all of which thrive in humid conditions. Monsoon air also contains pollutants and bacterial allergens. Mould, cold air and dust can aggravate asthma, increasing the frequency and severity of attacks. Pneumonia, a more serious respiratory infection, also becomes more prevalent during the rainy season, as pathogens multiply rapidly in humid conditions and spread easily in closed, poorly ventilated spaces.
Managing indoor humidity is essential for protecting respiratory health. Keep indoor spaces well ventilated to prevent mould growth, a major trigger for asthma. Avoid wearing damp clothes or remaining in stagnant, wet environments, as these encourage bacterial growth. Wearing a high-filtration mask while visiting crowded public places or heavily waterlogged areas can also help reduce exposure to infectious agents. Maintaining good hygiene and washing hands frequently are effective ways to prevent the spread of viral infections.
To strengthen immunity, stay well hydrated, eat a balanced diet, and consult a doctor about timely influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations.
