Panchkula, Aug. 20 -- Rainwater accumulated near the Mother and Child Care Hospital and mortuary at the civil hospital in Sector 6 of Panchkula, causing inconvenience to patients, attendants and hospital staff on Wednesday. Several city roads were also submerged, while water entered houses in some low-lying areas. The MC maintains around 55,000 road gullies on internal sector roads. MC commissioner Vinay Kumar claimed that the drainage system was functioning well, but the ongoing state-level strike by sanitation workers had resulted in horticultural waste, plastic and other garbage accumulating on roads and over road gullies, leading to waterlogging. Rakesh Agarwal, a member of Vikas Manch, Panchkula, said Sectors 15, 19, 20, 21, 23 and IT Park were among the worst affected. He alleged that despite crores of rupees being spent on cleaning road gullies, several 45- to 50-year-old drainage pipes remained clogged and had neither been cleaned nor replaced.. htc...
