Ferozepur, Aug. 28 -- More than 2,000 people were rescued from flood-affected villages in Ferozepur as the rising Sutlej threatened to inundate more areas on Wednesday. In Ferozepur district, 62 villages have been affected by floods, including 12 that are completely submerged. The district administration, with support from the Army, BSF, NDRF, and police, has been carrying out round-the-clock rescue operations. Villages worst hit by rising Sutlej waters include Dheera Ghara, Talli Gulam, Nihala Lavera, Nihala Kilcha, Kilche, Kaluwala, Tandiwala, and Gatta Badshah, where houses and farmland lie submerged under water. Deputy commissioner Deepshikha Sharma said 12 relief camps have been established at Bagge Wala, Bare Ke, Dulchi Ke, Fatte Wala, Joege Wala, Dona Mathar, and Madi Ke. The situation remains precarious with 2.6 lakh cusecs of water being released from Harike Headworks and 2.58 lakh cusecs flowing downstream from Hussainiwala into Pakistan. To ease the pressure, 25 gates at Hussainiwala have been opened. Officials say conditions may improve if rainfall in the hills subsides and further releases from upstream dams are avoided. In Fazilka district, the NDRF carried out dramatic rescues of a 16-year-old boy, Sajan, from Teja Ruhela village. Stranded with two companions, he clung to a tree until a team led by commander Rekh Singh Meena reached the spot with a boat and brought him to safety. The NDRF also rescued seven youths from Gulaba Wali Bhaini, who were stranded while attempting to travel to Jalandhar for a Navy recruitment trial.
