KOHIMA, Sept. 27 -- The toll in Nagaland's suspected adulterated-liquor tragedy rose to 19 after eight more people died in Mokokchung district on September 24 and 25, officials said. This follows the deaths of 11 people in neighbouring Tuensang district between September 10 and 12, suspected to have been caused by spurious liquor. Nagaland is a dry state under the Nagaland Total Liquor Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, which prohibits the possession, sale, consumption, manufacture, import and export of liquor in the state. Mokokchung deputy commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma said, "We have confirmation regarding the unfortunate deaths of eight persons due to the suspected consumption of spurious liquor." The deaths prompted the police to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday and intensify raids against the illegal sale of alcohol. In connection with the case, 25 people have been arrested across the district.
