Mumbai rain: 6 killed in chawl cave-in, 2 more in tree collapses
Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai/ Thane/ Vasai, July 6 -- Six people were killed and one was injured after a three-storey chawl (row tenement) collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area, while two others died in tree-collapse incidents in Kurla and Aarey Colony as heavy rains, accompanied by winds, lashed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) on Sunday. Schools and colleges will be shut on Monday amid forecasts of more rain.
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the first incident occurred at Chawl No 5 in Janta Nagar at around 8.30 pm. Officials said four women and two men were declared dead at the hospitals. One of the injured is still being treated, they said. As per preliminary information, two to three tenements forming part of the three-storey structure caved in, prompting a rescue operation by personnel from Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, BMC ward office and '108' ambulance services, the officials said.
A rescue and search operation is underway to ascertain if more people were trapped under the debris, the official added. Local BJP corporator Navnath Ban said that one more person is still feared trapped under the debris. Meanwhile, a 63-year-old businessman, Yunus Kundawala, was killed when a large branch from a Saptaparni tree fell on him in Kurla West, killing him on the spot. "Around 12.40pm, as he stepped out of the yet-unopened hardware store along Khairani Road, a tree branch came crashing onto him," said Vijayendra Shinde, chairman of the L Ward Prabhag Samiti. In a similar incident, Sakinaka resident Hasan Sayyad (18) was riding through the Aarey Colony with friends amid heavy rain around 3.30am when he was struck on the head by a falling branch. "They rushed him to Balaji Hospital in Malad East, where he was declared dead on arrival," police said. The deaths come days after an 11-year-old boy died after a tree uprooted and fell onto a school van in Chembur on June 30.
Separately, a 20-year-old man died after falling into a drain, while another 20-year-old man was electrocuted to death in Vasai and Virar. In Ambernath, a 21-year-old man drowned in a dam, while in Vashi, a 35-year-old man was killed after a balcony grill collapsed on him from an ageing building....
