Srinagar, Nov. 6 -- Mehbooba Mufti was unanimously re-elected as president of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) for the fifth consecutive term on Thursday, the party said. The party leaders and members of the electoral college of the party assembled at its headquarters in Srinagar for the organisational elections, which culminated in the unanimous re-election of Mehbooba. The proposal to re-elect Mehbooba was moved by senior party leader Ab Rehman Veeri, while Mohammad Khursheed Aalam seconded the proposal. "The unanimous mandate reflects the faith, confidence and collective resolve of the party leadership, elected representatives and dedicated cadre in her leadership," the PDP said in a statement. Mehbooba took over as the party president in 2002. Since then, she has continuously held the position. The party was formed by Mehbooba's father and former J&K chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in 1999 after leaving the Congress. PDP went on to form the government along with the Congress in 2002 and later, in 2015, with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Addressing party leaders and workers after being unanimously re-elected PDP president, Mehbooba asked the Centre to trust the people of Jammu and Kashmir. "There is no doubt that right now, there is a party here with 50 seats that obeys your (Centre's) every command. Whatever you ask for, whatever you want to execute through the Lieutenant Governor, you are now executing through them, and they don't even utter a sigh of protest," she said, referring to the National Conference government. "Yet, trying to normalise everything or getting a rubber stamp from some political party is no solution to the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. You will have to place your trust in its people," she said....
