Louvre museum director resigns months after jewel heist in Paris

he director of the Louvre Museum in Paris, Laurence des Cars, who had faced intense scrutiny since the heist of the French crown jewels in October last year, has stepped down from her position. The office of French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the same on Tuesday.
In a statement, the presidency said Macron accepted her resignation and described it as "an act of responsibility at a time when the world's largest museum needs calm and a strong new impetus to carry out major projects involving security upgrades and modernisation."
On the morning of October 19 last year, thieves took less than eight minutes to steal crown jewels worth 88 million euros (approximately Rs.800 crore) in a weekend heist at the world's most visited museum, sending shockwaves globally. Des Cars had been director of the Louvre since 2021.
She had offered to resign on the day of the robbery, but the culture minister refused to accept it at the time. "I saw a tragic, brutal, violent reality for the Louvre, and as the person in charge, after all the hard work done by the teams that day, it felt right to offer my resignation," she had said in November.
A successor for Laurence is expected to be appointed shortly. HTC...
