Immensely proud: Commentator on Iyer loving his Sarpanch nickname
India, April 20 -- What started as a spontaneous line in the IPL commentary box has now become one of the most talked-about tags of the season, and sports commentator Sunil Taneja is fully basking in the moment.
After Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer admitted that he "loves" being called 'Sarpanch' in a recent interview, Taneja (who coined the nickname during Punjabi IPL commentary) says that the cricketer's reaction "means everything" to him.
"I am immensely proud," the commentator tells us, adding that the moment wasn't scripted but instinctive, inspired by Iyer's leadership. "It was spontaneous, from the heart. I am so happy that he loves it too," he adds.
For Taneja, the story also reflects Punjab's fan culture: "Of course, luck is there. Iyer is a Keralite from Mumbai, and today he's the biggest star in Punjab. That's the good part about IPL. His performance drives the fans, and their love drives him. We are just catalysts celebrating this connection."...
