India, May 19 -- A aron Rai became the first Indian-origin (British) golfer to win the PGA Championship in over a century (107 years), but it was his unusually sentimental setup that also became one of the biggest talking points of the tournament. Unlike most professionals who constantly upgrade equipment, Rai still uses a TaylorMade M6 driver released in 2019. In elite golf, where players frequently switch to newer technology, Rai's loyalty to older gear stood out as a nod to his father's sacrifices. Equally unusual are the iron covers on his clubs, something rarely seen on the professional circuit. The habit dates back to his childhood in Wolverhampton, where his father, Amrik Singh, carefully protected the clubs he bought for his son despite financial struggles. Rai has often recalled how his father would clean each groove after practice sessions using baby oil and a pin. The covers, he says, became a reminder to value what he has. Then there are Rai's trademark two gloves. The golfer began wearing them as a child while practising through freezing English winters with his father. Though initially meant to keep his hands warm, the habit stayed because he eventually became more comfortable gripping the club that way. Born in 1995, Rai comes from an Indian-origin family. His father is the son of Indian immigrants, while his mother, Dalvir Shukla, moved to England from Kenya. Rai turned professional at just 17 and is married to Indian golfer Gaurika Bishnoi....
