Head of Dhanda gang, 2 members held in Canada
Toronto, July 9 -- A US Department of Justice (DOJ) indictment on Tuesday brought to light for the first time the details of the Dhanda gang, a British Columbia-based criminal network accused of smuggling and distributing large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine across North America.
Following the indictment, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested three members of the gang, including its leader, 57-year-old Ravinder Singh Dhanda of Vancouver. The three appeared in court on Tuesday and are scheduled for bail hearings later this week.
According to the indictment, the gang transported, smuggled and distributed hundreds of kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine every week from the United States into Canada.
The DOJ alleged that Dhanda "operated a drug distribution network that provided international smuggling services for bulk quantities" of narcotics to drug trafficking organisations in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Investigators said the narcotics were smuggled using long-haul trucks and, at times, farm vehicles. The other two accused arrested in Canada are Jaskarn Baghri, 50, of Surrey, and Gurtej Singh Smagh, 43, of Creston. The indictment alleges Smagh had access to an informant within the Canada Border Services Agency, which authorities are investigating. RCMP commissioner Mike Duheme said that authorities would seek their extradition to the US, adding search warrants were executed at properties in West Vancouver, White Rock and Surrey....
