Frame charges against Lalu, family, says HC
New Delhi, Sept. 11 -- A Delhi court on Thursday ordered framing of money laundering charges against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, son Tejashwi Yadav and six others in a case linked to alleged irregularities in the leasing of two IRCTC hotels when Lalu Prasad was the railway minister.
Special Judge Vishal Gogne said there was a "strong suspicion" that an "abuse of office" by Lalu Prasad generated proceeds of crime that came into the hands of Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav, who continue to enjoy the use of the allegedly tainted land in a prime commercial area of Patna. "The land at Patna is proceeds of crime and a charge of money laundering is likened to be framed against them," the court order stated.
The court said prima facie, the tender process for railway hotels in Ranchi and Puri was manipulated during Lalu Prasad's tenure as railway minister, with the contracts awarded to Sujata Hotels Pvt Ltd in an alleged "quid pro quo" arrangement.
The court noted that Sujata Hotels directors Vijay and Vinay Kochhar subsequently transferred prime land in Patna to Delight Marketing Company Pvt Ltd, owned by the family of RJD leader and former Union minister PC Gupta and his wife Sarla Gupta. The CBI and ED have alleged that Lalu Prasad and IRCTC officials misused their positions to rig the tender process and favour Sujata Hotels. In return, 358 decimal of prime Patna land was allegedly transferred in 2005 to DMCPL....
