Chandigarh, Oct. 4 -- The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday asked newly appointed Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh whether he supports the anti-sacrilege law enacted by the present government and also questioned him over his alleged silence on drugs and "beadbi" (sacrilege) when he was in the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Reacting to Pargat Singh's appointment, senior AAP leader and cabinet minister Harpal Singh Cheema asked him to explain why he did not raise his voice against the drug menace and incidents of sacrilege during the SAD-BJP government. "Drugs and sacrilege were among the biggest political issues in Punjab during the SAD-BJP rule, yet Pargat Singh did not publicly raise his voice against either issue at the time," he alleged at a press conference. Cheema claimed that when the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was introduced in the assembly, Pargat Singh had himself stated that there were two factions within the Congress on the issue of sacrilege - one faction of the party was in support of the bill and the other faction was not. "I want to ask the new Punjab Congress chief which faction of the Congress he is leading now," he said. Questioning Pargat's performance as education and sports minister in the previous Congress government, Cheema claimed that he "failed" in both these departments. He said the recruitment process of 1,158 assistant professors and librarians, which was carried out when Pargat Singh was the education minister, was subsequently set aside by the Supreme Court.
