Cong expels Navjot Kaur days after she quit party
Amritsar, Feb. 7 -- Six days after former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu announced her resignation from the Congress, the party's Punjab affairs in-charge and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday announced that she had been expelled.
He confirmed that while Navjot Kaur was previously under suspension, the party had now formalised her expulsion. While Kaur has been expelled from the party, her husband and former Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu is still in the Congress.
Baghel, who was at the residence of former Congress MLA Raj Kumar Verka, addressed the media alongside Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
Reacting sharply, Navjot Kaur launched a series of posts on X, taking a direct swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi using the "Pappu" moniker, a term frequently employed by the Opposition to target the Congress leader.
Accusing Rahul of being disconnected from ground realities, she alleged that a coterie around the leadership was "selling tickets" and enjoying "luxuries" while keeping the leadership "in exile from the truth".
"He takes more than six months to react to an emergency call, by which time loss is inevitable," she added, advising the leadership to be "more mindful, mature, and practical".
In subsequent posts, Navjot Kaur also praised the BJP. Her remarks and repeated praise for the BJP further fuelled speculation about a possible return to the party from which she and her husband, former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, began their political careers. She had previously served as a BJP MLA from Amritsar East before the couple joined the Congress ahead of the 2017 assembly polls.
The friction between Navjot Kaur and the party leadership dates back to December 8 last year, when she was suspended from the primary membership following her controversial claim that "one who gives a suitcase of Rs.500 crore becomes the CM". "We always speak for Punjab and Punjabiyat... but do not have Rs.500 crore to sit in the chief minister's chair," she had told the media.
Nearly two months later, on January 31, Navjot Kaur announced her decision to quit the Congress, where she claimed "no promising leader was heard". In her exit note, she also targeted Warring, accusing him of colluding with CM Bhagwant Mann to "destroy the party".
Her criticism of Congress leadership intensified in her X posts on Friday, where she accused Rahul Gandhi of "living in a self-created paradise".
"You think that people like me who have struggled to become a postgraduate have time to spare for you??? No , my time is only for the people of Punjab and I can work for them without politics...my time and energy is only for Punjab's welfare. Learn to respect honest and hard working people or else you are bound to lose existence in politics," said Kaur.
In another post, she said, "I swear by the preachings of Guru Granth Sahib ji, Gurus, Bhagwat Gita, Upanishads...welcome to the holy city of Amritsar and I will book your rooms until you start understanding and following our scripture's because you are probably reading them but not understanding even the MOOL MANTRA."...
