Kolkata, May 7 -- Preparations are in full swing for the swearing-in ceremony of ministers of West Bengal's first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, scheduled for May 9 at Kolkata's historic Brigade Parade grounds. The ministers will be sworn in by governor RN Ravi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, senior central leaders and chief ministers from all BJP-ruled states, the party's state unit chief Samik Bhattacharya said on Wednesday. This is the first time in Bengal's history that a government will be sworn-in at a public place instead of the Governor's House or Raj Bhawan, according to convention. "The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 10 am on May 9. Besides our top leaders, many eminent citizens, including Padma awardees, will be invited. It will be a colourful event," Bhattacharya said. "The selection of ministers will happen at a legislative party meeting at 4 pm on May 8 in the presence of our senior central leaders," he added. Shah is the party's central observer for the selection of Bengal ministers and Odisha chief minister Mohan Majhi is the co-observer. The legislative party meeting will be held at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town, one of the big projects of the outgoing Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Shah, BJP leaders said, was scheduled to arrive in Kolkata on Thursday. After the Bengal poll results were announced on May 4 - the BJP won 207 of 294 seats against the TMC's 80 - the BJP leadership announced that the oath-taking ceremony will coincide with the 25th day of the Bengali month of Boisakh, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Located amidst the greenery of the Maidans - which is under Vijay Durg, the Army's Eastern Command headquarters - Brigade Parade Grounds has witnessed some of the biggest political events and rallies in India's history. On November 29, 1955, former PM Jawaharlal Nehru felicitated Nikita Khrushchev, then the first secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Soviet PM Nikolai Bulganin at the Brigade Parade Grounds.
