Barbs fly thick and fast as Ph-1 campaign nears end
Patna, Nov. 4 -- The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition Grand Alliance clashed in poll-bound Bihar on Monday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing his opponents of ushering in crime and siding with infiltrators in a special pitch to young voters, and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav questioning the PM's language and alleging large-scale corruption by the ruling coalition.
With one day to go for the campaigning to close for the first phase of elections on November 6, Modi alleged the RJD-Congress combine promoted 'Jungle Raj', stalled Bihar's progress with appeasement politics to protect infiltrators.
He also slammed Opposition leaders for their stance on the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, apparently referring to a video by Lalu Prasad showing the family celebrating Halloween.
"This Seemanchal region has been like a sentinel (prahari) for our culture and civilisation. But, for the past few years, RJD and Congress have been trying to upset the demographic balance here for the sake of a few votes. They are pushing Bihar towards danger by taking the side of infiltrators for votes. They are playing with the future of your children and daughters. Should infiltrators be allowed to avail free ration or free medical aid?" Modi asked in Katihar.
Modi alleged that the two parties were evidently fond of "kattar panthis" (extremists) and "kattas" (country-made pistols). "But the people must decide whether they can let the infiltrators demand a share in their entitlements," he said.
"Certainly, the poor people, including my Mahadalit brethren, will not be in favour of the infiltrators enjoying benefits meant for them, like free ration and free health insurance," he added. In the first phase, 121 seats go to the polls on November 6.
Yadav, who is the Opposition's chief ministerial candidate, addressed around 15 rallies in Bhojpur, Ara, Saran, Patna and other districts.
"If you want a job, elect us," he asserted in most of his rallies, which were just no longer than five to ten minute stop overs. At the Majhaua Airport Ground in Ara, Yadav said that corruption reached its peak under this 20-year government. "Go to any office today and you won't find work without payment. Today, Bihar has become known as the state of migration. Youth are crammed like goats into trains to other states for employment. The situation with education and health is the same. Farmers in Bihar are not getting fair prices for their crops," he said.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the "absence" of CM Nitish Kumar in Modi's roadshow in Patna and political rallies elsewhere in Bihar, and asserted that the BJP was not going to make him the CM again.
Earlier in the day, Yadav also took digs at Modi for the latter's comment that the Congress was pressured to declare him the CM face at "gun point". "We do not think like this. We don't speak negatively. I don't know why the PM loves such words. When he goes to Gujarat, he speaks about installing factories. But when he comes to Bihar, he speaks about guns. We had never seen such low-level language used by a PM. What language is he using?" he said.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra too criticised the PM. "PM Modi feels insulted so frequently - he should set up an 'Apaman Mantralaya' to record every jibe, saving his time for real issues," said Gandhi in Sonabarsa. She accused Modi of dodging NDA's Bihar failures - corruption, joblessness, education collapse - while fixating election-eve sops. "Why offer money now, after two decades?" she asked. The NDA is hoping to beat anti-incumbency and a challenge from the Grand Alliance to secure a fifth straight term for Kumar.
In Saharsa, Modi alleged that the dictionary of RJD and Congress was filled with words like "'katta' (country gun, cruelty and corruption".
"In the dictionary of RJD and Congress. What words, what emotions are there? The dictionary of RJD and Congress is filled with words like 'katta', cruelty, bitterness, bad manners, bad governance, and corruption. This is all they learned in the school of Jungle Raj," he said.
PM Modi said senior leaders of the Congress and RJD did not find time to visit the Ram temple in Ayodhya or other shrines of Shabari Mata and Nishad Raj.
