Amritsar, Sept. 20 -- One of the accused who allegedly gunned down an ASI-ranked police officer in Amritsar two days ago was killed in a late-night encounter in the Islamabad area on Saturday, police said. Identified as Deepak Singh of Mulechak village, he opened fire at a police team, drawing retaliation, said police commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill. A .30-bore pistol, two magazines, eight live cartridges, a mobile phone and an Activa scooter allegedly used in the commission of the crime have been seized. Assistant sub-inspector Harjeet Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, was on night patrol duty in the Dana Mandi area under the Gate Hakima police station when he was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants late Thursday night. Giving operational details, Gill said two suspects riding an Activa scooter were signalled to stop at a police checkpoint (naka) at 9.45 pm, but they opened fire at the cops and sped towards another checkpoint. At the second barricade, the suspects again opened fire, discharging four rounds at the police personnel. The police team returned fire in self-defence. Deepak sustained bullet injuries, while his accomplice fled. Gill said a search operation was under way to arrest the other accused who managed to flee. Earlier in the day, ASI Harjeet's cremation was performed in Tarn Taran with full honours in the presence of senior police officials. After the killing of the ASI, chief minister Bhagwant Mann and DGP Gaurav Yadav had expressed solidarity with the family, confirming a total relief package of Rs.2 crore, including Rs.1 crore in state ex gratia and Rs.1 crore in insurance benefits....
