Ajay Devgn's Chauhaan faces backlash over Rajput identity
India, July 1 -- Actor Ajay Devgn's upcoming film Chauhaan has landed in controversy days after its teaser was released on June 25, with the Kshatriya Parishad accusing the makers of "weaponising Rajput history and appropriating Rajput identities."
In a statement posted on X (inset above) on Monday, the organisation said, "The Chauhans are a historic Rajput (Kshatriya) lineage whose legacy belongs to history, not to partisan campaigns or manufactured media controversies," and said that the film was being used for "electoral or ideological purposes".
The teaser opens with a monologue on decades of unrest in Kashmir, referring to 75 years of conflict in the area, heavy military deployment and failed temporary measures, before ending with the dialogue, "Pathaanon se kehna, Chauhaan aa raha hai," positioning Devgn's character as the force set to change the course of the conflict.
The Kshatriya Parishad said invoking the Chauhan clan name to "provoke outrage" and "inflame caste and communal sentiments" was "irresponsible and disrespectful," adding that historical memory "must not become a tool for communal mobilisation." The makers of the film, directed by Neeraj Yadav, have not responded to the controversy at the time of going to press.
