New Delhi, Aug. 6 -- Air India on Wednesday appointed Tewolde Gebremariam, former chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines Group, as its new CEO and managing director, succeeding Campbell Wilson, who is due to step down on September 30. The airline, in a statement, credited Gebremariam with a decade-plus run atop Ethiopian Airlines during which the carrier's revenue grew more than fourfold and its fleet nearly threefold, transforming it into Africa's largest and most profitable airline group. The board's search, overseen by a dedicated committee, considered both internal and external candidates, the airline said in the statement. It added that the panel was looking for a leader capable of managing large-scale turnarounds, expanding international networks and building hub operations - capabilities Air India said Gebremariam had already demonstrated at Ethiopian Airlines, alongside experience in MRO and aviation training infrastructure.
