Accused doc's wife held over cough syrup deaths
Bhopal, Nov. 5 -- The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was probing the cough syrup tragedy that claimed the lives of 24 children in Madhya Pradesh, has arrested the wife of paediatrician Praveen Soni, who is currently in jail for prescribing adulterated medicine, police said on Tuesday.
According to police, Jyoti Soni is the proprietor of a pharmacy at his husband's private hospital in Parasia block of Chhindwara, where most of the children were prescribed the Coldrif syrup.
"Jyoti Soni was booked three days ago for selling the toxic syrup, illegal storage, and destroying evidence. She had been absconding since then, and surrendered at the Parasia police station on Tuesday," an official familiar with the matter said. "In the investigation, she failed to explain the missing stock, suggesting deliberate removal to destroy evidence," he added. On Tuesday, a local court remanded her in three-day police custody.
Coldrif, manufactured in Tamil Nadu's Kancheepuram, was found to be dangerously adulterated with diethylene glycol or DEG, a toxic substance. The DEG concentration was found to be over 48% in Coldrif compared to the permissible limit of just 0.1%. The first death linked to kidney failure due to consumption of Coldrif was reported on September 4. So far, seven people have been arrested in connection to death due to consumption of toxic cough syrup. htc...
