Amritsar, May 17 -- Three students were injured after two groups of students from Kashmir and Bihar clashed at the Khalsa College of Engineering and Technology in Amritsar on Wednesday night, with videos of the incident surfacing on social media on Saturday. Police officials said the brawl began after some students from Bihar were speaking in their local dialect in the hostel mess, which some Kashmiri students allegedly mistook for abuse and objected to. The argument escalated after Punjabi hostellers also joined in, leading to a clash between the groups. Three students sustained minor injuries amid the melee and were treated at nearby hospitals. The situation had triggered panic on the campus on Wednesday night, following which police personnel reached the spot and restored order. Security was tightened on the campus after the clash. College authorities said disciplinary action was taken the same day against the students involved in the fight. The students have been expelled from the hostel for six months, though they will be allowed to appear in examinations. The situation flared up again the following day after some students from Bihar raised slogans, alleging that a faculty member supporting the Kashmiri students had slapped one of them. Following their complaint, the college management suspended the faculty member and reportedly recommended further action. The videos of the clash and sloganeering outside the hostel were circulated widely on social media, including by AAP MLA Mehraj Malik. Deputy commissioner of police (investigation) Jagjit Singh Walia visited the campus on Saturday after the videos surfaced online. He said the atmosphere on the campus remained peaceful and academic activities were continuing normally. Ranjit Avenue police station house officer Robin Hans said the initial dispute between the students had already been resolved and the complaint against a teacher was being handled by the college management. College director-principal Manju Bala said the clash was being given a "wrong colour". "On the complaint of a group of students belonging to Bihar, the management has already suspended one of the faculty members. But outsiders appear to be instigating the situation through social media," she added....
