Chandigarh, Aug. 28 -- A total of 243 nominations have been submitted for the student council elections across 11 city colleges. Continuing the trend from previous years, Guru Gobind Singh College for Women (GGSCW) in Sector 26 has seen only one nomination for all four posts in the student council, ensuring it will be an unopposed fight. The candidates are Bhoomi, a BCom third-year student, for the president's post; Akoijam Jesita, a BA third-year student, for vice-president; Divya J Mangain, a BA second-year student, for secretary; and Vanshika, a BSc first-year student, for joint secretary. In a surprising development, the Government College of Commerce and Business Administration will be the second college this year without an election, as all 25 nominations were rejected due to insufficient attendance. Only one candidate, Harshdeep Singh, was deemed eligible for the position of vice-president, while the rest were disqualified. At Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma (GGDSD) College (SD College) Sector 32, the city's largest with over 9,000 voters, saw unexpected development on nomination day. The prominent student group Sanatan Dharam College Union (SDCU), which has held the presidential post for the past two years, faced a major setback as their candidate Mohit Sharma was excluded from the nomination list. Currently in alliance with Himachal Students Union (HIMSU) and Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU), SDCU is now reshuffling its candidates. Historically, SDCU and Student Organisation of India (SOI) have alternated victories in the student council elections at the college. However, this year SOI has not announced any alliances and is fielding BA first-year student Bhavya Bagaria for the presidential post. Rizwal Singh will contest as the presidential candidate from India Secular Front (ISF) and Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), a student wing of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has fielded Loukik Katwal as their presidential candidate. At DAV College, Sector 10, Hindustan Student Association (HSA) and SOI are the main competitors who have been winning the student council elections on an alternate basis for the past two years. This year, HSA has announced that they will go in an alliance with Himachal Pradesh Students Union (HPSU) while SOI has made an alliance with INSO and HIMSU. HSA has fielded Khushwinder Kaku, a MA first year student as their presidential candidate and SOI has decided to go with Harmehak Singh Cheema for the presidential post. At Government College Of Commerce and Business Administration, Sector 50, a total of 26 candidates have filed their nomination for student council as well as for class representative posts. Other than Harshdeep Singh, Bhavneet Kaur was eligible for BBA first-year class representative. To take part in student council elections, a student is required to have a minimum of 75% attendance....
