PANAJI, Sept. 15 -- Tarun Tejpal, former editor of Tehelka magazine, surrendered before the North Goa Sessions Court in Mapusa on Monday and was taken into custody to begin his 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence at the Colvale Central Jail in a 2013 sexual assault case. The development comes weeks after the Supreme Court, on August 25, rejectedTejpal's plea seeking exemption from surrendering followinghis conviction by the Bombay High Court on August 6 ontwo counts of rape, after a junior colleague alleged that he had forced himself on her whilein a lift at a hotel in Goa back in 2013, where the magazine was organising its annual "Think" festival. The apex court had listed his appeal challenging his conviction and sentence for hearing on September 22, subject to the filing of the surrender certificate. A subsequent petition, filed on September 11, to delay surrender on account of Monday being a public holiday was also rejected by the North Goa sessions court. Tejpal surrendered early on Monday before the Additional Sessions Court at Mapusa,after which he was sent to the Central Jail at Colvale in North Goa to begin serving his sentence. "I just want to say we are in the Supreme Court and are sure that justice will come," he said as he was being taken into custody. In its August 6 order, the high court bench of justices Neela Gokhale and Amit Jamsandekar overturned Tejpal's acquittal by a trial court and pronounced him guilty under sections 376(2) (f) (rape of a woman by her relative, guardian or teacher of, or a person in a position of trust or authority), 376(2)(k) (rape of a woman by a person in a position of control or dominance), section 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (criminal assault with intent to disrobe a woman) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code. The high court sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.5 lakh each for the convictions under section 376(2) of the IPC. Under Section 354 he has been sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of Rs.10,000. For the conviction under section 354A he has been sentenced to imprisonment for one year, under section 354B he has been sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of three years and pay a fine of Rs.10,000. Under sections 341 and 342 of the IPC he has been fined Rs.500 each.
