Ferozepur, July 24 -- Two minor siblings are missing, while their parents had a miraculous escape when the motorcycle they were travelling on plunged into a canal in Ferozepur on Tuesday night, officials said. According to reports, the incident occurred near Warpal village, around 40 km from Ferozepur, in the Makhu area of Zira subdivision, when their motorcycle skidded on a bridge, sans safety railings and fell into the Ferozepur Feeder Canal. "Jasvir Singh was returning home to Mallanwala with his wife, Mandeep Kaur, their four-year-old son, Gurbhej Singh, and two-year-old daughter, Nimrat Kaur, when their motorcycle skidded in the mud over the canal bridge. With no safety railings in place, the family plunged into the fast-flowing canal. Jasvir managed to save his wife, but despite his frantic efforts, both children were swept away by the strong current. By the time villagers responded to his cries for help, the children had vanished," village sarpanch Balwinder Singh said, adding that they have repeatedly given written appeals for railings on the bridge to the local authorities but to no avail. Ferozepur deputy commissioner Deepshikha Sharma said that a rescue and relief operation was currently underway. "A 30-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been requisitioned, and an extensive search operation is ongoing to trace the missing children," Sharma said. "Zira SDM magistrate Gurmeet Singh visited the site and met the family. He has submitted a detailed report," the DC said, adding that immediate relief measures have been initiated....
