Haridwar, May 15 -- A charge sheet has been filed in what officials describe as the first case related to Halala under the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code (UCC), 2024 before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Haridwar on Thursday. Under the Uttarakhand UCC Act, Halala (Nikah Halala) has been declared an illegal and void practice. The practice refers to a situation in which a divorced woman, after an irrevocable divorce, is compelled to marry another man, consummate the marriage, and is allowed to remarry her former husband only after the second marriage ends through divorce or death. According to police officers, the case pertains to allegations made by a woman from Buggawala village, who approached the local police station alleging mental and physical harassment, including triple talaq and coercion to undergo Nikah Halala at the hands of her husband and in-laws.
