Chandigarh, July 27 -- Severe traffic congestion near the Chandigarh railway station on Sunday left hundreds of commuters stranded for more than one hour. Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari took to social media platform X, describing the situation as "an absolute mess". He claimed commuters took nearly one-and-a-half hours to cover the 1-km stretch from the Madhya Marg light point to the railway station, resulting in many passengers missing their scheduled trains. Tewari alleged that despite repeatedly raising the issue with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Chandigarh Police, no effective measures had been taken. He urged Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to direct the authorities to put in place proper traffic management arrangements at the railway station. The MP also appealed to the DGP to ensure better coordination between Chandigarh Police and the RPF, including the Haryana Police detachment posted at the station. Official handle of Divisional Railway Manager, Ambala, also replied on X and ordered RPF, Ambala to look into the matter. SSP (security & traffic) Sumer Partap Singh said additional deployment would be considered in the area to ease congestion. He said the traffic wing had suggested to the administration that the bus stop outside the railway station be shifted further ahead, as buses taking U-turns near the station often add to traffic snarls. He added that action was regularly taken against auto-rickshaw drivers who picked up and dropped passengers on the roadside to avoid paying parking charges, further aggravating congestion. The ongoing construction work at the railway station has also been contributing to traffic bottlenecks, with taxis and app-based cabs frequently picking up and dropping passengers on the carriageway instead of designated parking areas, narrowing the available road space....
