1,626 died in rain-related disasters this year: Govt
New Delhi, Aug. 7 -- At least 1,626 people died due to rain-related disasters this year, according to the data shared by minister of state for home, B Sanjay Kumar in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The minister said this in reply to a question by Congress MP Neeraj Dangi about the state wise data on human lives lost, animal deaths and crops destroyed due to "heavy rains and lightning".
Kumar said 52,367 animals' lives were lost and 157,817.63 hectares of cropped area was destroyed due to "hydro-meteorological disasters' this year(data up to July 30, 2025). Most lives lost were reported from Assam(343), followed by Madhya Pradesh(243) and HP(195 lives). Uttarakhand, where a suspected cloud burst in at least three locations of Uttarkashi district on Tuesday triggered flash floods, reported 71 deaths this year.
