Winter Olympics opening pays tribute to Giorgio Armani
India, Feb. 8 -- The Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan unfolded on an emotional note on Friday, paying tribute to legendary Italian designer Giorgio Armani, who died in September at 91. Models dressed in Armani creations in green, white and red walked the runway to form the Italian flag, turning fashion into a moment of national homage.
Calling it "a very emotional moment", Olympic Ceremonies Producer Marco Balich told Variety ahead of the ceremony. The official Milano Cortina 2026 account echoed the sentiment, describing it as "one celebration of Italian elegance, a legacy that continues to shine."
Armani's sports line, EA7, outfits Team Italy, with the designer having earlier described the collaboration as a source of "great pride," symbolising harmony with the snow-covered peaks through a palette of white. Armani also serves as the official outfitter for this year's Winter Olympics.
