India, Aug. 23 -- Days after HT City highlighted backlash over JW PEI marketing a saree-like garment as a "maxi dress", the Los Angeles-based label has changed its listing. The navy, pre-draped design, earlier called a "Botanical Embellished Draped Overlay Maxi Dress", is now listed as a "Botanical Embellished Saree-Inspired Gown." Content creator Arshia Moorjani also questioned in her Instagram video why a design featuring the saree's signature drape and pallu was being marketed as a Western dress. The post drew widespread online criticism, with HT City subsequently reporting on the controversy and Indian fashion voices also weighing in. The new listing explicitly says the gown is "inspired by the traditional South Asian saree" and reinterprets its signature drape. While some users welcomed the change, others noted that "saree-inspired" still stops short of identifying the garment as a saree, keeping questions around cultural credit and appropriation alive. The episode echoes the 2025 Prada controversy, when sandals resembling traditional Kolhapuri chappals drew criticism for initially failing to acknowledge their Indian roots.
